NOTICE TO RESIDENTS OF PETERBOROUGHIn order to sustain water quality in the water distribution system, the Peterborough Utilities Services once again intends to perform routine flushing of water mains in various areas of the City.
The flushing will be conducted generally between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday September 9, 2024 to Friday November 22, 2024.
If you should notice iron coloured water, please let your cold water tap closest to the source run for 20-30 minutes or until the water clears. If this does not resolve the water problem, please direct your questions and concerns to:

Concerns about lead
Peterborough Utilities has been very proactive with regards to this issue in our community. In 1989, Peterborough Utilities completed a 5-year program to replace all the lead services within the distribution system up to the property line.
Annually, the Ministry of Environment Conservation & Parks requires us to sample a set number of distribution samples. In 2018 all samples were below the Ontario Drinking Water Standard.
The drinking water leaves the treatment plant lead-free and is distributed through water mains down each street lead-free. Drinking water only comes into contact with lead when it reaches the service line from the water main to an individual property and/or in the plumbing and fixtures within individual homes and buildings.
Some homes that were built prior to 1989, that have not had services replaced, could potentially have lead in their drinking water because of internal plumbing. As the use of lead service lines was phased out in the 1960's, this only affects older homes in older neighbourhoods.
Additionally we can provide testing to homeowners if they suspect they may have lead services or fixtures within their home.
