Why do water mains leak or break ?
Water mains typically leak or break more often in winter months. Cold weather causes movement in the soil due to freezing/frost penetration, which creates increased forces and point loading on water mains. Other causes of water main leaks and breaks include internal and/or external corrosion.
How do we fix it?
Staff will determine where on the pipe the problem occurred, the severity of the leak and will obtain emergency locates. Staff will then excavate to locate the leak and a clamp will be used to fix a smaller hole if suitable or staff will replace the section of failed pipe.
How is the drinking water protected during the break?
Staff follow the current Ontario water main disinfection procedure. Positive pressure is maintained during a water main break to ensure foreign material does not enter the pipe. Once the pipe is clear of surrounding soil/debris and fully exposed the water pressure is reduced so the repair can be completed.
How many breaks do we have each year?
The Peterborough water distribution system typically experiences between 20-30 water main breaks each year.
