Biogas
Biogas is the natural byproduct from decomposing waste. Biogas generating stations use gases like methane for fuel to generate electricity. Methane that would be released into the air otherwise is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.
We have partnered with the City and County of Peterborough to build and operate two biogas generating stations for a combined output of 2 MW.
Bensfort Road Landfill Gas Plant
This 1.6 MW generating station uses biogas collected from wells located at the Bensfort Road landfill site. The biogas is used to fuel a combustion engine to create power. The power station was completed in 2013.
This facility is operated through LFG Power Corporation.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
This 350 kW combined heat and power (CHP) plant uses biogas from the digestion process to fuel a combustion engine at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Kennedy Road in Peterborough. The heat from the engine is captured and added to the existing heating system. The facility was completed in 2016.
This facility is operated through Peterborough Utilities Inc.
